Mudvayne’s reunion tour gave fans an unforgettable moment of irony when frontman Chad Gray fell off stage while performing ‘Not Falling.’ According to MetalSucks, it took place during their July 26 show in Tampa, Florida, during the Freaks on Parade tour with Rob Zombie.

Chad Gray’s Ironic Fall

It all happened during an important time for Mudvayne. The band had just returned to performing after a 12-year hiatus. Their 2021 reunion announcement led to their first shows in over a decade. They appeared at major events like Upheaval Festival in Grand Rapids and Rock Fest in Cadott before embarking on their co-headlining Freaks on Parade tour.

Gray was performing ‘Not Falling’ from the band’s 2002 album ‘The End of All Things to Come’ when he fell off stage. A roadie immediately checked on the vocalist. Gray continued the performance without interruption. He showed no signs of serious injury. The crowd witnessed the fall firsthand, and Gray’s professionalism kept the performance’s energy.

Gray Thought It Was ‘Amazing’

Gray provided a detailed account of the incident. “What happened was I basically walk to the edge of the stage, and I step across and I put my foot on top of the barricade,” he explained. “The crowd surged forward, pushed my foot off backwards… and my whole f*cking body just went ‘Wham!’ like that, right on top of the barricade, right across my sternum.”

He continued, “I thought I was gonna p*ss my pants; it hurt so f*ckin’ bad. We were ironically in the course of ‘Not Falling’, which is amazing, so I just started singing that. And I was able to sing. So I just pushed through the sh*t.”

During his appearance on DWPresents On Twitch’s ‘The Gunz Club’ show, Gray talked about the irony. “It’s amazing. I mean, it really is. The f*cking irony, that it happens during ‘Not Falling’ is just unbelievable. It’s so crazy.”

Legacy of Stage Falls

MetalSucks reported that Gray’s video quickly went viral across social media platforms, and this isn’t the first time a musician fell off stage mid-performance. For instance, Dave Grohl’s 2015 stage fall resulted in a broken leg but didn’t stop his performance. Gray’s fall and recovery is another proof of ‘the show must go on’ mentality in metal culture.
