Dovas has taken over the position in light of Dave Lombardo’s absence. Skolnick noted that fans have responded positively during recent concerts. “Chris [Dovas] came out, and I have to say, that’s a tall order, filling in for Lombardo and explaining to the fans, ‘Sorry, Dave will not be making an appearance tonight.’ It’s like an understudy in a play… So, he was the understudy… And nobody complained after the shows,” Skolnick said.

He went on to emphasize how well audiences have embraced Dovas’s presence in the lineup. “I remember just thinking about this: ‘Everybody’s happy. I can’t picture them being any happier had Dave been able to make it.’ So, okay, that really says something. So, yeah, he’s fired us up. He’s brought a whole new flavor,” he continued.

Skolnick also commented on the band’s creative direction, describing how their new material explores different musical ground without abandoning their signature sound.

“There’s definitely more extreme music there [on ‘Para Bellum’]. And I think it’s good. We have enough music now of the classic Testament. And some of those songs [on ‘Para Bellum’] do venture into that territory. But I’m glad — I’m glad we’re going into new territory, and doing it with a musician on that level just makes it really exciting,” Skolnick concluded.

Testament’s drumming situation has seen major changes over the past year, shaping the context behind Dovas’s role. Longtime drummer Gene Hoglan stepped away due to scheduling issues, as noted by Blabbermouth, prompting the band to look for new talent as they entered a fresh album cycle.

Dave Lombardo, known for his work with Slayer, later joined to handle live performances. However, his demanding schedule kept him from fully committing to the recording and extended touring required for “Para Bellum,” according to Ultimate Metal. This eventually led Testament to secure a more permanent fixture behind the kit.

Chris Dovas ultimately became Testament’s full-time drummer, making his first recorded appearance with the band on their 2025 album “Para Bellum,” as confirmed by Blabbermouth. Skolnick’s recent remarks highlight how effectively Dovas has stepped into the position, infusing the group with renewed energy while honoring the band’s established identity.
