Kyle Gass has unveiled plans for a new live album with his group, the Kyle Gass Band, as Tenacious D continues its hiatus after Jack Black chose to pause the duo following Gass’ controversial moment during a 2024 live performance. The news was shared via an official statement posted on Instagram.

In the announcement, the Kyle Gass Band provided details about the forthcoming release, which was recorded at a recent live show. “A perfect start to the new year: a new album out from the Kyle Gass Band!” the band announced. “‘LIVE IN PALMDALE’ is now available for pre-order.”

The statement went on to offer more information about the recording and its release schedule. “12 rippin’ tracks recorded live at Transplants Brewing Company,” they said. “Album out 1/23. Get into the groove, you know where to go.”

The announcement highlights Gass’ continued musical momentum despite Tenacious D’s current break, with the live album slated for release on January 23rd.

This pause marks a notable moment for a duo that has been entertaining audiences for more than 30 years. Louder Sound previously reported that Jack Black and Kyle Gass were both involved in the experimental LA theatre collective The Actor’s Gang in the mid-1980s, prior to forming their comedy-rock partnership.

Tenacious D was officially formed in 1994 and went on to gain a following through its distinctive mix of comedy and rock music. According to Wikipedia, the duo has earned significant industry recognition, including a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.

The hiatus followed a controversial incident during a live show in 2024. AV Club reported that Black canceled the band’s tour and placed “all future creative plans” on hold after Gass made an onstage joke about a sensitive political subject while referencing his birthday wish.

As Tenacious D remains on hold, Gass’ move to continue with his solo project underscores his determination to keep creating music. The Kyle Gass Band’s upcoming live album signals a new phase for the musician as he navigates this uncertain period alongside his longtime collaborator.
