Adema: The Story Of Marky Chavez’s Forgotten Nu Metal Band

Adema’s first record in ten years, an EP named ‘The Cerberus,’ didn’t include some of the band’s original members in the lineup when it came out earlier this year. That is because the band went through a series of conflicts throughout the years, which also affected its place in the music scene.

The Formation Of Adema

Vocalist Mark Chavez, lead guitarist Tim Fluckey, rhythm guitarist Mike Ransom, bassist Dave DeRoo, and drummer Kris Kohls formed Adema in 2000 and released their first album a year later, following the two singles’ Giving In’ and ‘The Way You Like It.’

As their second album, ‘Unstable,’ hit the shelves in 2003, talks about the band’s labeling as ‘nu metal’ began and reflected on the relationship between the members. The rivalry between Ransom and Chavez about Adema’s musical direction triggered some problems around that time.

The Fall Between Ransom And Chavez

The two didn’t talk to each other throughout the group’s 2003 tour. The guitarist left the lineup in the middle of the ongoing shows while the other four members finished them.

This period affected Adema’s record sales, with their second album selling 66% less than the first. So, by mid-2004, Chavez, losing interest in the band, decided to leave as well.

Later, Kris Kohls talked about the reason behind the two original members’ departure in a chat with Earache.com by saying:

“They didn’t like each other, and the other three guys in the band were caught in the middle of all the arguments. Without going into too much detail, Marky’s a hard guy to deal with. He’s not the easiest guy to get along with. It just came down to a mutual split.”

The Latest Change In The Lineup

The group replaced Ransom and Chavez with Luke Caraccioli and Tom Fluckey in the third studio album, ‘Planets.’ Their vocalist changed once more in the next record, ‘Kill The Headlights,’ as Bobby Reeves joined the others, but the singer didn’t stay long.

In 2010, the original Adema lineup reunited for a tour, although Ransom didn’t join them to work on another project. They had plans for another trek the next year, but Chavez left the band again before its start when his bandmates didn’t let him bring his wife to the shows.

Tim Fluckey and David DeRoo then took over vocal duties, and Ransom rejoined the band in the following years. While Ryan Shuck replaced Chavez, Adema embarked on 2023’s Nu-Metal Madness Tour 2 with its latest lineup.
