Brann Dailor Explains Why Brent Hinds Loved to Provocate Others with ‘I Hate Metal’ Claim

Mastodon’s drummer Brann Dailor has shed light on the controversial nature of his late bandmate Brent Hinds, explaining that the guitarist had a penchant for stirring up drama and testing boundaries. Dailor reflected on Hinds’ infamous 2015 statement to Guitar Player magazine where he declared, “I fucking hate heavy metal, and I don’t want to be in a heavy metal band.”

“Brent said a lot of things that he probably didn’t mean,” Dailor explained. “He liked to talk some shit and stir the pot and get people’s blood boiling, I guess. I feel like he felt he could control a situation if he threw a wrench.”

The 2015 statement sparked significant backlash from Mastodon’s fanbase. Many interpreted Hinds’ words as a direct rejection of the genre that defined the band’s career. However, the context behind the provocative declaration reveals a more nuanced perspective on Hinds’ relationship with heavy metal and his artistic evolution.

Hinds’ original comments stemmed from his musical roots and personal philosophy about the genre. He came from Alabama, where he grew up playing country music, surf rock, and rockabilly before transitioning into metal. He explained that he had only embraced heavy metal during his twenties because it felt rebellious at the time. His genuine musical preferences, however, lay elsewhere. When he met Dailor and bassist Bill Kelliher, who were deeply passionate about heavy metal, Hinds attempted to steer Mastodon away from being strictly categorized as a heavy metal band.

The guitarist’s provocative statement became a flashpoint in metal discourse. Media outlets amplified the headline-grabbing nature of his words. Later, Hinds claimed the quote had been taken out of context. He clarified that he meant he hated “most heavy metal” rather than the entire genre itself. His criticism was directed at formulaic and cookie-cutter approaches to metal rather than a blanket condemnation of the music itself. This distinction highlighted how his comments were often misrepresented in their most sensational form.

Dailor’s recent reflections suggest that Hinds’ controversial statements were part of a broader pattern of behavior. The guitarist enjoyed testing people’s reactions and pushing boundaries. Whether discussing metal’s merits, making inflammatory social media posts, or challenging conventional wisdom within the band, Hinds appeared to relish the role of provocateur. His tendency to say things designed to provoke strong reactions became a defining characteristic of his public persona, even when those statements didn’t necessarily reflect his complete or nuanced views.

The drummer’s candid assessment provides fans with a more complete picture of Hinds’ personality and motivations. Many of his most controversial moments were less about genuine conviction and more about his desire to challenge assumptions and maintain control over narratives surrounding himself and the band.
