Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan combined comedy and music throughout his career. He also drew great attention to himself when he started a hilarious campaign against Courtney Love by using her daughter Frances Bean Cobain to get revenge on her.
Courtney Love And Frances Bean Cobain’s Relationship
Frances Bean Cobain is the daughter of Hole lead singer Courtney Love and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. You can think that she is very lucky to have famous parents, but Frances’ childhood was very troubling due to his father’s suicide and her mother’s serious addiction problems. Kurt Cobain killed himself on April 5, 1994, Courtney Love lost her control, and addiction problems arose again.
Love started to use drugs and was arrested because of breaking several windows of her producer and then-boyfriend James Barber’s home. She lost Frances’ custody for a while after the arrest. It caused serious problems between mother and daughter. Frances admitted in a previous interview that she was angry with her mother for a very long time. But she decided to forgive her and move on.
Maynard James Keenan’s ‘Free Frances Bean’ T-Shirts
Courtney Love called Maynard James Keenan a ‘media whore,’ and the Tool frontman wanted to make of fun Love by launching a so-called campaign named ‘Free Frances Bean.’ He announced the platform and a ‘Free Frances Bean’ t-shirt while he was talking about performing in benefit shows. He stated that he decided to launch his own campaign considering the problematic relationship between Frances Bean and Courtney Love.
Keenan shared his ideas about Frances and Courtney, saying:
“Everybody was trying to get us to do benefit shows, like ‘Free Tibet’. And I was gonna have my own platform: ‘Free Frances Bean.’ Just watching the tornado that is her mother, my first thought was, ‘Oh my God, how is Frances Bean Cobain gonna survive this insanity?’”
Keenan continued to target Love saying he was very surprised about her daughter’s ability to keep her sanity in spite of her toxic mother. The campaign started as a joke, but there were many who wanted to wear the t-shirt. This made Keenan give ‘Free Frances Bean’ t-shirts away. This probably made Courtney Love very angry.
