After the sudden death of numerous Deadheads in the 1990s, conspiracy theorists and remaining fans have been searching for clues and evidence to find the murderers. The number of fans disappearing kept increasing even after the 2000s.

The investigation focused on the double homicide of 22-year-old Mary Regina Gioia and 18-year-old Gregory Allen Kniffin, which dates back to 1985. After the night of the show in San Francisco, the two were found beaten to death.

There were no recent updates until the case opened again in 2020 in the ‘Dead and Gone‘ podcast. The podcast investigates the crime as well as the conviction with the aim of finding more details about the disappearing fans.

“When you think of the Grateful Dead, you think of peace and love and music and community. You don’t think of murder and true crime.”

The fans of the band had what would make them appear vulnerable, according to the co-creator of the podcast, Payne Lindsey:

“Grateful Dead fans sometimes had anything-goes lifestyles that made them vulnerable and put them in harm’s way. People expected peace and love but came across wolves in sheep’s clothing.”

He also touched on the people who might have been causing the sudden disappearance:

“There were people who’d take you into a Volkswagen bus, and you’re never seen again. People who attended shows in the ’80s told us about seeing bad people. There were opportunistic drug dealers.”

With the missing of Gioia and Kniffin, a then-thirty-one-year-old black man named Ralph International Thomas was arrested and sentenced to death for the murders. Years later, it was revealed that he was wrongly convicted.

Now, the actual killer, or killers, of the fans remain unknown.
