A legal document shared on Mitch Lafon’s Facebook page revealed internal tensions within REO Speedwagon. Bruce Hall approved the document, which shows the band ceased touring activities after 2024 due to control disagreements.

The document showed a letter sent by Kevin Cronin’s representatives, and stated, “Although we have our call in a few minutes, Shareholder 1 has just informed me that, given all that has transpired since you and I began discussing these band issues nearly 3 months ago, he feels, despite all our best efforts, that we’ve just reached an impasse between Shareholder 1 and the other two guys.” The legal correspondence continues, “In short, Shareholder 1’s just not willing to be the frontman of a performing group where he doesn’t effectively have a final say over its public presentation.”

“It doesn’t have to be the only say, but he has to be able to veto anything that he sincerely believes doesn’t live up to the standards he has always maintained for this group over forty successful years as their primary artistic director,” the document continues. “So he’s authorized me to tell you that 2024 will be the last year of touring as Shareholder 1, due to these irreconcilable differences, will withdraw from rendering further ‘Touring Activities with the Group’ effective January 1, 2025.”

According to MyQ105, tensions escalated in 2023 when bassist Bruce Hall underwent back surgery. Kevin Cronin suggested Hall take the year off to recover. This suggestion created friction between the band members.

Hall expressed dissatisfaction with Cronin’s handling of his temporary absence. This disagreement led to deeper conflicts about the band’s management and future direction.

Road to Rock details REO Speedwagon’s origins in Champaign, Illinois, in 1967. The band reached its commercial peak with their 1980 album “Hi Infidelity.” This release produced hits like “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run.”

Kevin Cronin joined the band in 1972. He briefly departed before returning in 1976. He has shaped the band’s success as their lead vocalist and key songwriter throughout most of their history.
