“That [Warrant] was Jani’s band. It was his baby. It was his thing. And he was unstoppable,” Guns said. “But he took it hard [when the rise of grunge in the early 1990s forced most hard rock bands off the radio and MTV, with album and tour sales plummeting].”

“We toured with them in the golden age of Nirvana killing us. We were touring and playing to 2,500 people a night. It was terrible,” he continued. “And I was with Jani a lot. I’m the one that gave him the f*cking mohawk. But he was really a gentle guy. If it would have been a hundred years earlier, he would have been the sensitive poet.”

“He was really that guy, and he just wanted to be accepted, he wanted validation,” Guns added. “And he had some trauma in his life that led to where it led him to. But he definitely made his mark. Whether you love Warrant or hate ’em, man, you know who they are.”

The rise of grunge created a significant shift in rock music history. This transformation affected both Warrant’s commercial success and their artistic direction.

Commercial Impact

Research from Ultimate Classic Rock reveals Warrant’s dramatic decline during the grunge era. Their album sales dropped significantly from their multi-platinum success of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The band attempted to evolve with the changing musical landscape. Their albums ‘Dog Eat Dog’ (1992) and ‘Ultraphobic’ (1995) showcased a darker, grittier sound. However, these releases failed to match their earlier commercial achievements.

Personal Struggles

Loudwire documents Lane’s deep personal connection to the changing music scene. His investment in the band’s original sound and image made the transition particularly challenging.

Lane faced unique difficulties during this period. His role as the band’s primary songwriter and his attachment to their original style intensified his struggle with the changing landscape.

Lasting Legacy

Planner Wire‘s retrospective analysis shows Lane’s songwriting transcended the typical ‘hair metal’ classification. His musical contributions continue to influence artists today.

His talent for crafting memorable melodies and meaningful lyrics has created a lasting impact. This legacy proves his artistry extended beyond the boundaries of any single era or genre.
