Shemane Nugent recently opened up about her husband Ted Nugent’s current approach to touring and how things have shifted for the rock icon. In a conversation shared on Wild Wine Life, she explained why Ted now performs under very different conditions than he used to.

Shemane noted that the rock and roll lifestyle has changed for them over the years. Touring allowed them to travel the world, but it also came with a demanding schedule that no longer fits their lives in the same way. As she shared:

“The problem often times is with this rock and roll lifestyle or touring that and I’m not knocking it. It is what it is. I’ve been able to see so much. But we often times don’t have a lot of time,” she said. “Sometimes the way that Ted plays or used to play — he officially retired from touring.”

Although Ted no longer tours in the traditional sense, he hasn’t stopped performing. Shemane explained that he now has one main rule when accepting shows: he must be able to return home the same night. As she put it:

“He’ll still play gigs but as long as he can come home at night,” she said. “So he did I think 15 shows this summer and then seven in a row, but he came he came home every night.”

This shift marks a major change in how the Motor City Madman manages his legendary career. Rather than following the intense, nonstop schedules of his earlier years, Nugent now focuses on selective appearances that allow him to stay connected to music without sacrificing his personal life.

Ultimate Classic Rock highlighted that Nugent has been careful about the language surrounding his career change. After his 2023 farewell tour, he clarified that he “never used the word retire.” At 76, he has chosen to replace long tours with occasional “rockouts” and one-off performances. For him, this distinction matters—he still considers himself active and creatively engaged, just on his own terms.

One of the main reasons behind this shift is his desire to stay close to home. According to Ultimate Metal, Nugent has said he needs to be “home to my dogs every day.” He’s also spoken openly about disliking long-distance travel, especially at his age. Constant touring no longer makes sense for the life he wants.

Still, Nugent insists that his passion for music remains as strong as ever. American Songwriter reported that the guitarist said “the music still has fire” and he still “craves” performing. He also described himself as “still absolutely stimulated by the pursuit of musical guitar adventure.” His focus now is on delivering quality shows rather than playing nonstop.

Looking ahead, Nugent already has select performances scheduled for 2025. Most will take place in Texas in April and May, with additional appearances in Michigan in August. With this balanced approach, he continues doing what he loves while keeping the lifestyle that works best for him and his family.
