Mike Portnoy recently addressed the timeline for Dream Theater’s next studio album while responding to fan expectations in a statement shared by MaytheROCK bewithyou.
When asked whether new music might arrive sooner rather than later, Portnoy explained that the band’s current focus remains squarely on its ongoing tour cycle. “Well, we have to wait because you know it’s been a long tour,” Portnoy said. “We’ve been out for a year now at this point. We started in October of 2024. And here we are a year later now.”
He went on to outline just how extensive the tour has become and why it continues to take priority. “And by the time we get down to Australia and wrap up the tour cycle a few months after that, it’ll have been a year and a half on the road,” Portnoy continued. “So, you know, that’s the focus right now.”
According to Portnoy, the band does not plan to immediately transition from touring into writing new material. Instead, a break is expected once the current run concludes. “But once the tour cycle wraps and concludes by, you know, next spring or so, we’ll probably take the summer off because it’s been a long road,” he said. “And then start thinking about a new album after that.”
As a result, fans should not expect the band to begin serious work on a new album until late 2026 at the earliest. The extended timeline reflects Dream Theater’s commitment to its expansive 40th anniversary world tour, which had already taken the band around the globe by late 2025.
According to Brave Words, the group is performing its latest album, Parasomnia, in full each night, along with the epic “A Change Of Seasons” in celebration of the song’s 30th anniversary. This ambitious setlist helps explain why the band’s energy remains focused on live performances rather than studio sessions.
Released in February 2025, Parasomnia marked a major milestone for Dream Theater’s reunited lineup. The album was the band’s first studio release featuring Portnoy since his return in October 2023, ending a 13-year absence, as reported by Metal Injection. Rejoining the group has required Portnoy to adjust to the band’s evolved dynamic, while taking on a heavy workload since his return.
That workload has already produced additional releases. A live album, Quarantième: Live à Paris, arrived in 2025, marking Portnoy’s second release with Dream Theater since rejoining the band, according to Metal Planet Music. The release underscores his remarkable productivity despite having only recently returned to the fold.
