Rob Trujillo has opened up about one of the most pivotal moments in his career. A whirlwind 48-hour period in 2003 saw two of heavy metal’s most influential figures come calling simultaneously. Trujillo described the surreal experience of being pursued by both Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica at the exact same time.

“Well, [me joining Metallica] was similar [to how I landed the gig with Ozzy] in that it took a while before I knew what was going on,” Trujillo explained. “In these situations, decisions like that don’t always happen overnight. There might be three months where you’re wondering, ‘What’s going on?’ It took some time with your dad [Ozzy], and then it took a minute again with Metallica. That could’ve been because they were working on records and dealing with life, business, and all that.”

The bassist recalled how Ozzy Osbourne made the first move. Ozzy called to inform him about upcoming tour plans. “Your dad had called and said he was gonna go on the road and do Ozzfest and, ‘Let’s go.’ And I was, like, ‘Yeah, let’s go.’ And then like the next day Lars [Ulrich, Metallica drummer] called and said, ‘Hey, we want you to come up to San Francisco. We gotta talk to you.'”

The timing proved almost impossible to believe. “In those 48 hours, there were two of the most powerful individuals in hard rock looking for me,” Trujillo said. When he met with Metallica’s leadership in San Francisco, he made clear his commitment to honoring his existing obligations. “I remember going up and saying… They were like, ‘Hey.’ They gave me the gig and I said something like I wanted to make sure that I took care of your dad and went on tour and fulfilled my commitment. And they were, like, ‘Well, the train’s moving and it’s moving fast.’ Metallica had a new album coming out and all that.”

Ultimately, Trujillo chose to join Metallica, a decision that would prove transformative for both the bassist and the legendary metal band. On February 24, 2003, Metallica officially announced that Trujillo had joined their ranks, replacing Jason Newsted, who had departed the band two years earlier in January 2001. The announcement came at a crucial moment for the band as they were preparing to release new material and embark on a major touring cycle.

Trujillo had previously built an impressive resume that included stints with Suicidal Tendencies, Black Label Society, and most recently, Ozzy Osbourne’s band. He had recorded the 2000 album “Down to Earth” with Osbourne. His technical proficiency and stage presence made him an ideal candidate to fill the void left by Newsted’s departure.

Since officially joining in 2003, Trujillo has become the longest-serving bassist in the band’s storied history. He has surpassed the tenure of all previous bass players, including founding member Cliff Burton and his immediate predecessor Jason Newsted. His contributions to the band’s sound and live performances have been instrumental in maintaining Metallica’s status as one of the world’s premier metal acts.

Reflecting on the convergence of opportunities that defined that fateful 48-hour window, Trujillo emphasized the unpredictability of such moments in the music industry. “It was just one of those rare moments where two incredible things were happening at the same time, and you have to make a decision for the future. In a weird way, things happen at the same time, and you can’t explain why. Your dad actually called me. Your dad didn’t call me every day. And then Lars called me, so it was that kind of a situation.”
