Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen, along with Eddie’s widow Janie Van Halen, recently shared heartbreaking tributes to the late guitarist Eddie Van Halen on the sixth anniversary of his death, as seen on Instagram.
The family members expressed their deep grief and enduring love for Eddie, who passed away in 2020. Each shared a personal message to honor his memory.
“A million times I’ve needed you, a million times I’ve cried,” Alex Van Halen wrote. “If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life, I loved you dearly, in death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place, no one else can ever fill. It broke my heart to lose you, but you didn’t go alone, part of me went with you, the day that God took you home.”
Eddie’s son, Wolfgang Van Halen, also shared his own emotional tribute to his father.
“6 years,” Wolfgang Van Halen wrote. “It doesn’t get any easier. Love and miss you more than you could ever know, Pop.”
Additionally, Eddie’s widow, Janie Van Halen, posted a brief but poignant message.
“So it begins and until the end…” Janie Van Halen shared.
The tributes arrive six years after Eddie Van Halen’s death, a loss that continues to resonate across the rock world. His family’s words reflect the lasting impact he had both as a musician and as a father, brother and husband, and they also serve as a reminder of the legacy he built over decades.
Eddie Van Halen passed away on October 6, 2020, at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer. He was the guitarist and songwriter who helped give the rock band Van Halen its name and sound, and his high-flying guitar technique inspired generations of players.
Wolfgang Van Halen has continued to carry his father’s musical influence while building a career of his own. He launched his band Mammoth WVH and honored his father with the tribute song “Distance” after Eddie’s death.
Wolfgang Van Halen has been open about balancing his own path with his father’s legacy. “It’s important I forge my own path,” he told, while noting that doing so does not mean distancing himself from the man who shaped his music.
Eddie Van Halen’s legacy also rests on the honors earned by his band over the years. Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, cementing the group’s place among rock’s most influential acts.
Those achievements, paired with the tributes from his family, show why Eddie Van Halen’s influence has endured well beyond his death. Six years later, his music and his memory remain a defining part of rock history.
