Shinedown’s Brent Smith recently chatted with Good Charlotte’s Benji Madden, recalling a moment from the 2025 Grammy Awards involving his friend, Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante. During an interview on the red carpet, LaPlante was mistakenly identified as Poppy. Instead of correcting the interviewer, LaPlante handled the mix-up.
“Dude, I know her very well and, when she did that, that just elevated her to another level,” Smith recalled. “She wasn’t mean [when the interviewer didn’t recognize her]. She just rolled with it.”
The Lack Of Rock and Metal Categories In Grammys

Smith also took the opportunity to speak out about the lack of representation for rock music at the Grammys.
He emphasized that the absence of rock performances on the show has alienated a significant portion of the music community. “Don’t alienate a community of people and listeners that is massive. I can’t remember the last time there was a rock and roll performance at the Grammys.”
The singer urged the Grammys to expand its categories and include more rock performances. “I think it’s time that the Grammys take initiative to let rock and roll present itself again, because they look at ratings and they look at how many people watched and how many people are tuning in it’s like you would have so many more people watching the Grammys as well with all of these different categories.”
“Now you’ve only got so much time to televise everything but again rock and roll ain’t just a genre man it’s a way of life. I really hope that in the future that they start to broadcast a bit more rock and let artists come in there that can throw down,” he added.
LaPlante’s Grammy Red Carpet Prank

At the 2025 Grammy Awards, Courtney LaPlante had a fun moment when an interviewer confused her with Poppy. Instead of correcting the mistake, LaPlante went along with it, saying, “I am Poppy, and I am really happy to be here nominated with Knocked Loose. I really hope we win.”
She continued the joke, adding, “I was actually nominated in, I believe, 2020. Really happy to be here again, would love to take home the Grammy for Knocked Loose and myself because I would be the first woman to win this award.”
Poppy later shared the video on her Instagram, and the light-hearted moment became a highlight of the night.
