Few musicians leave a band as legendary as Metallica and manage to carve out a new identity for themselves. Jason Newsted, who served as Metallica’s bassist from 1986 to 2001, did just that. His departure from the band was a turning point in his career, but his journey didn’t end there. So, where is Jason Newsted now, and what has he been up to since leaving Metallica?

Jason Newsted joined Metallica in 1986 after the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton. He debuted on the ‘Garage Days Re-Revisited EP’ and officially appeared on ‘…And Justice for All,’ though his bass parts were almost inaudible in the mix.

He played a crucial role in Metallica’s most successful albums, including The Black Album,’ ‘Load,’ and ‘Reload.’ However, he often felt like an outsider, as James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich were still grieving Burton’s loss.

Tensions grew in the late ‘90s when Newsted wanted to start a side project called Echobrain. Hetfield strongly opposed it, and it caused a breaking point. In 2001, Newsted left the band, citing physical strain and creative frustrations.

After leaving Metallica in 2001, Jason Newsted pursued various musical projects. He joined Voivod in 2003 and later formed his own band, Newsted, releasing Metal and Heavy Metal Music. The band became inactive by 2014 due to financial struggles and other interests. However, in 2023, he revived Newsted and performed their first show in nearly a decade in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Beyond his own projects, Newsted has been involved in various collaborations and was approached for a potential Van Halen reunion tour in 2022, though it didn’t happen.

In mid-2024, he sold over 60 of his guitars and basses through a Reverb sale. Most of the guitars had been used in studio recordings and music videos.

As of 2025, Newsted continues to receive collaboration offers but remains careful about his projects. In 2024, he made headlines by selling his bass guitar from ‘The Black Album’ era.

Outside of music, he focuses on painting and spending time with his wife. Though he’s no longer part of Metallica, his influence on the band and heavy metal remains significant.
