“Mike Portnoy started this band,” Rudess stated. “He was also probably one of the main reasons that I’m even in it.”

“I think you let the clouds move and the weather changes and the things happen and it’s finally, like, ‘Okay, well, this is a great time for him to return to the band,'” he continued. “And it just made sense for everybody, the timing of that, and something that we all wanted to see happen. So it just took some a lot of changes in different relationships and situations to kind of allow it to happen. And so finally it did.”

Rudess’s candid reflection reveals a deeper story about Dream Theater’s relationships and significant transitions over the years.

The Rudess-Portnoy Connection

Rudess joined Dream Theater in 1999 as the band’s keyboardist, replacing Derek Sherinian, according to Louder Sound. His connection with Portnoy began through their collaboration in Liquid Tension Experiment. This project ultimately led to Rudess becoming a member of Dream Theater.

Portnoy and Rudess developed strong musical chemistry during their time together. Their collaborative efforts helped shape Dream Theater’s progressive sound as both musicians pushed their instrumental boundaries.

The 2010 Departure

Portnoy’s departure from Dream Theater in 2010 ended a 25-year era for the band. Rudess maintained his essential role in Dream Theater throughout this period. The band received several Grammy nominations for albums released during this time.

Mike Mangini took over the drumming duties after Portnoy’s exit. This change helped create a new chapter in Dream Theater’s history.

The Path to Reunion

Portnoy’s return to Dream Theater in 2023 marks a full-circle moment for the band. Rudess’s comments highlight how natural evolution and timing made this reunion possible.

The reunion brings together old friends and opens a new chapter for Dream Theater. This latest development combines the band’s established progressive metal foundation with renewed creative energy.
