Mudvayne and Hellyeah frontman Chad Gray recently opened up about a severe vocal injury that forced him to cancel two of his solo shows in California, sharing his fears for his career during an appearance on The Jesea Lee Show. The vocal trauma led to the cancelation of his scheduled performances at the House Of Blues in San Diego on October 5 and the Observatory OC in Santa Ana on October 6.

Gray explained how he first noticed the issue during rehearsals in Nashville, initially mistaking the symptoms for seasonal allergies.

“I live in the desert, and we flew into Nashville for rehearsals [for my solo tour], and my voice wasn’t working,” Gray said. “So I thought it was, like, allergies. There’s a lot of ragweed there, and just other shit. It’s a Petri dish in Nashville when it comes to allergies. So I thought it was just that.”

As rehearsals continued, his condition worsened, prompting him to consult a vocal coach and eventually seek medical attention.

“And then we started moving, and it wasn’t getting better; it was actually getting worse,” Gray continued. “I was just working with my coach, and she’s, like, ‘I don’t know what’s going on, but something’s going on. I don’t know what it is, but something’s going on.’ So I went — four days ago, [I] got scoped [where they] put the thing down your nose and look at your vocal cords.”

The medical examination revealed significant trauma to his vocal folds, including a broken blood vessel.

“And they looked at it, and one of my vocal folds is twice as wide as the other one, which makes it heavier than the way your vocals work, ’cause [they’re like] butterfly wings,” Gray explained. “They hit each other, and now mine are f*cking crazy hitting each other. And there’s a big broken blood vessel on the front of it, which means that at some point I’ve hemorrhaged and bled or whatever.”

Gray noted that he did not cough up blood, which made it difficult to pinpoint exactly when the injury occurred, especially since he felt good about his voice prior to the rehearsals.

“No, [I didn’t cough blood],” Gray said. “But I wish I would’ve coughed up blood so then at least I would know when it happened. Because my shows before these shows, I was, like, ‘I can’t miss.’ I felt really good about my voice vocally. So I’m supposed to stay quiet — vocal rest… So that’s where I’m at, man.”

The singer expressed deep anxiety over the situation, emphasizing how critical his voice is to his life and livelihood.

“To tell you I was scared would be the understatement of my life,” Gray admitted. “’Cause I’m f*cking scared to death. It’s not only my instrument — it’s my life, it’s my career, it’s what I do for a living. The idea of the potential fatality of this is enormous. But you gotta take care of it. And it’s a hurry-up-and-wait thing. The only thing that’s gonna heal it is time.”

While he does not require immediate surgery, Gray anticipates that a procedure may be necessary in the future to address the enlarged vocal fold.

“[I don’t need surgery] at this point,” Gray concluded. “But I think I’m gonna need one, though, to deal with that larger fold. So, yeah. I don’t know. But, yeah, not to bring everybody down. But life-wise, I’m good. Health-wise, I’m good. Just my throat’s f*cked up.”

This vocal injury has put his immediate solo touring plans on hold as he focuses on recovery.

Gray’s diagnosis lands in the middle of a packed touring stretch, and the fallout is already visible on his schedule.

The October 5 House of Blues San Diego show and the October 6 Observatory OC date in Santa Ana were canceled after Gray experienced vocal fatigue, with the tour expected to resume on October 7 in Las Vegas. Gray told fans he needed time to rest his voice and recover in the hope of continuing the run, while both California dates were expected to be rescheduled.

The shows are part of a solo run that carries special weight for the veteran vocalist. The trek is billed as the “30 Years of Madness” tour, celebrating Gray’s three decades in the music business with a setlist that draws from both the Mudvayne and Hellyeah catalogs.

That catalog is the product of a career that has made Gray one of heavy music’s most recognizable frontmen. The 54-year-old has spent more than three decades as the voice of Mudvayne and the supergroup Hellyeah, building a reputation as one of the most intense and uncompromising performers in the genre.

The injury Gray described — a hemorrhage of the vocal fold — is treated as a medical concern rather than a routine bout of hoarseness. Vocal fold hemorrhage must be treated immediately with total voice rest and a trip to the doctor.

“Vocal fold hemorrhage must be treated immediately with total voice rest and a trip to the doctor,” the NIH states on its voice disorders page.

That guidance lines up with Gray’s own description of his prescribed treatment, and it explains why rest is the first line of defense. “Voice rest” means minimizing talking rather than whispering, since whispering forces the vocal folds into an unnatural position and can slow healing, and recovery from an acute hemorrhage can take weeks.
