Slaughter to Prevail frontman Alex Terrible has opened up about deeply personal experiences during a recent interview. He broke away from his intimidating deathcore persona to share rare insights into his past. When asked what he’s never admitted in an interview before, the Russian vocalist revealed a harrowing childhood incident: “I was almost stolen by gypsies when I was three years old. I’m a gypsy by the way.” The candid admission showcases a vulnerability that contrasts sharply with his public image as one of extreme metal’s most fearsome performers.

The frontman also addressed his emotional side when discussing his relationship with media and entertainment. He stated: “I cry almost every month or so watching the TV shows or good movies.” This revelation humanizes the masked musician, demonstrating that beneath the aggressive vocal delivery and theatrical persona lies someone capable of genuine emotional connection.

Born Aleksandr Shikolai in 1993 in the Ural Mountains of west-central Russia, Terrible’s early life was shaped by the turbulent 1990s and a strict upbringing. His childhood began in the small village of Bolshoy Istok before his family relocated to Sysert. His stepfather, a Russian navy veteran, co-founded a military school for boys after his biological father departed when Terrible was six years old. The harsh environment of his youth forged a resilient character, though not without consequence.

At nine years old, Terrible stole his stepfather’s car and crashed it while fleeing from police. This incident foreshadowed the rebellious energy that would later define his artistic persona. After completing his education at the military cadet school, he pursued specialized training as a mechanic. He worked in local factories operating heavy machinery, a far cry from the international stages he would eventually command. His trajectory took a critical turn around age nineteen when he overdosed on drugs. This wake-up call prompted him to fundamentally transform his life and redirect his energy toward music and physical fitness.

Terrible’s rise to prominence began through viral YouTube vocal covers that showcased his signature extreme screams and guttural vocals. He earned a cult following online before the formation of Slaughter to Prevail in 2014. British guitarist Jack Simmons, formerly of the London-based deathcore act Acrania, discovered the then-twenty-year-old vocalist and reached out to collaborate. Terrible’s English proficiency was limited at the time. This unlikely partnership between the Russian vocalist and British guitarist became one of deathcore’s most compelling creative forces. Terrible sings in both Russian and English while developing his distinctive artistic identity through his iconic devil mask—inspired by childhood fascinations with superheroes like Spiderman and Spawn—and his self-inflicted facial scar.

Beyond his music career, Terrible has cultivated a reputation as someone who treats his public image as experimental art. He channels the energy of a video game character through his involvement in bear-wrestling and bare-knuckle cagefighting. Yet he consistently emphasizes that this theatrical persona masks a fundamentally different person off-stage. He describes himself as “weirdly wholesome” in his private life. His recent candid interview demonstrates this duality, revealing that the man who commands stages with demonic vocals and an intimidating appearance is also someone shaped by genuine trauma. He is capable of deep emotional reflection and proud of his gypsy heritage—a multifaceted identity that extends far beyond the extreme metal archetype audiences encounter in performance.
