Helmet’s breakup and subsequent reunion tell a complex story. According to Louder, the band dissolved in 1998 after four albums and nearly a decade of intense work that strained relationships within the band.

What Was The Breaking Point?

The original lineup of the band slowly fell apart because of growing tensions. They had a very tough tour schedule, playing 22 shows in 21 days while traveling in a small van. This made things very difficult. “We were really sick of each other,” Hamilton said about that time. The final split happened when bassist Henry Bogdan and drummer John Stanier had a big argument with Hamilton, ending the original lineup.

“The band worked too hard and the grind caused the dynamic to change,” Hamilton explained. “Because I wrote the songs the atmosphere became toxic. I wanted to take a year off but the others wouldn’t do that, so that was it. I had songs for a solo album but Jimmy Iovine [of Interscope Records] wanted me to release them as Helmet, so that’s what started it all again.”

Why Did Hamilton Want a Helmet Reunion?

Helmet’s comeback in 2004 happened in an unexpected way. Page Hamilton wanted to release a solo album, but Interscope Records executive Jimmy Iovine suggested using the Helmet name instead. This decision turned what could’ve been a solo project into a Helmet reunion with a completely new lineup.

Hamilton looked back on the break-up, “We were working so hard, y’know, doin’ 22 shows in 21 days and driving around in this little van. And when you put a lot of miles on, tensions build up, and we definitely had our share of moments. We needed a break, and those guys just decided they didn’t wanna do it anymore.”

He added that he knew Helmet should continue. “At that point I pretty much thought that Helmet was done, but I thought it was a shame. ‘Cause I knew I wasn’t done,” he said.

Hamilton Has Regrets Over His Leadership

Hamilton briefly considered reaching out to Bogdan and Stanier for a potential reunion. He ultimately decided against it due to their lack of communication. “I was so lucky to find Stanier and Bogdan back then — those guys are monster players. Helmet is my band. I write all the music and all the lyrics, and I was the one who found those guys,” Hamilton stated matter-of-factly.

He later reflected on the challenges of band leadership: “Maybe be a little bit more flexible as a bandleader or try to communicate more, not feel guilty about coming in with cool songs.”

It seems financial success also was an issue. Hamilton noted, “I have so many friends that are in bands that seem to hate it; they’re just burned out and they don’t like their music and they’re doing it for the money and the paycheck. I’m not. I’m doing it because I absolutely love it.”

They also have plans for South American Dates in April/May 2025 featuring special guest debrix.
